Wireless self-powered monitoring system for underground cable joints: a real use-case

To enhance safety in underground power distribution, reliability in cable joints is a key point for a smart and renewable power system. This paper reports a wireless self-powered and distributed sensor prototype to monitoring joints and cable temperature. This device allows early detection of failures due to aging or deterioration of the insulation. The approach discusses the theoretical foundations and design for the energy harvester in medium voltage underground cables. Besides, data processing and Internet of Things communication methods are described in detail. A real use case in a pilot project installed in a renewable power plant of ACCIONA Energía is also reported and discussed.
