EV charging evaluation using real-world datasets: a case study of energy consumption, peak power, self-consumption and self-sufficiency

E-mobility is rapidly growing because of its clear economic and environmental benefits compared to conventional vehicles. This rapid deployment presents new challenges, such as peak demand and charging losses, that need to be minimised using energy management strategies. Smart charging is a commonly used such strategy to manage energy demand in an office building. This paper investigates EV charging losses for onboard chargers operated by three different charging methods, namely uncoordinated (dumb) charging, smart charging, and load balancing using key performance indicators such as energy consumption, peak power, self-sufficiency and self-consumption. Data analysis based on real-world datasets shows that smart charging is superior to dumb charging in every metric and offers a good compromise compared to load balancing. However, load balancing is the best strategy when it comes to reduce the peak power.
