Conceptual design of special protection scheme for enhancing renewable energy integration

High integration of intermittent renewable energies has posed challenges to grid controllability and stability. Several remedial actions can be performed to relieve bottlenecks, increase power transfer capability, or prevent grid instabilities. A Special Protection Scheme (SpPS) is an automatic scheme that performs corrective remedial actions and could be integrated into a defense plan to quickly bring the system back to a normal state. This paper presents a conceptual design use case for high weatherdependent renewable energy penetration in the transmission system. Communication architecture approaches are presented with fundamental functional and non-functional requirements to ensure reliable performance as well as flexibility and scalability for future integrations.
