Measuring the power grid resilience: a case study applied to Brazilian distribution companies

Brazilian distribution companies have been increasingly exposed to high-impact, low-frequency events - HILF caused by weather hazards, such as tornadoes, torrential rains and cyclones. As a result, the utilities constantly need to plan the expansion and modernization of electrical systems to, not only meet reliability criteria, but also make the system resilient to extreme events. This paper provides a quantitative resilience metric for power grids and apply it to the 30 largest distribution companies in Brazil. For this intent, resilience metrics are defined considering data related to the utilities' infrastructure and operation.
