A Broadband Ka-Band Reconfigurable Reflectarray Utilizing Dumbbell-Shaped Unit Cells

A 1-bit reconfigurable reflectarray (RRA) designed with the dumbbell-shaped unit cells is proposed. The cell structure is implemented using four metal PCB consisting of the radiation, ground, RF choke, and DC bias layers. The RRA is designed for the 5G application operating at n257 frequency band. The simulation shows cells bandwidth of 19% covering 24.9 GHz to 30.1 GHz, which meets the designate bandwidth requirements. Specifically, the peak simulated gain of the 1600-cell RRA is 29.4 dB while the achievable beam scanning range is ±60°.
