Design and Analysis of Quad-Element MIMO Antenna Applied to the Wideband Transmission

The design of a 4x4 MIMO antenna for Wideband (C-X-Ku-K-band) communication systems is presented in this work. The single antenna element is comprised of a semicircular ring structure with circular holes backed by a modified partial ground plane having dimensions of 23x21mm2. To increase the antenna bandwidth and gain, the defective ground structure is implemented with semi-circular structure & slots. The single antenna element has a wide impedance bandwidth of 18.23 GHz and operates from 4.40 GHz to 22.63 GHz. For MIMO applications, a 4 x 4 array is designed and analyzed on FR - 4 substrate material having dimensions of 42x38x1.6mm

. The proposed MIMO antenna provides wideband response from 4.19 GHz to over 24.59 GHz having fractional bandwidth of 141.76%. It is mentioning that good isolation characteristics more than 20dB are achieved without the utilization of any isolation enhancement network. The radiation and diversity performances of the antenna are evaluated, and the obtained metrics are ECC < 0.025, DG ≈ 10 dB, TARC < 0.5, and CCL <0.3 bits/s/Hz. The proposed antenna is believed to have a valuable prospect in UWB communication, Wireless Body Area Network, ISM, mobile communication applications, etc.
