Constrained Path Optimization for Automated Directional Drilling

This paper outlines the modeling, development and closed-loop testing of a real-time path planning algorithm for automated directional drilling. This real-world problem was formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problem and both simulation and field testing were performed to validate the closed-loop performance of the proposed algorithm.
