Implementation of an OAM System for Multi-Vendor Open RAN Base Station

Traditional telecom equipment manufacturers are still leading in mastering 5G base station technology nowadays. To reduce vendor lock-in, many telecom operators and international organizations are promoting Open Radio Access Networks (RAN), which aim to decouple the RAN into different components and mitigate supply risks with a diversified supply chain. In other words, it can increase the flexibility of deploying 5G base stations and reduce costs. However, integrating equipment from multiple vendors is a huge challenge for network management. We developed an Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) system that manages multi-vendor O-RAN base stations based on specifications and expands adapters for vendor-specific parts. In this paper, we will discuss the design of the OAM system and the aspects that need to consider for implementation.
