Integrating Existing Pre-Paid Energy Meter to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) System

The Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) has the capability to calculate system losses in real time, which is a significant advantage. However, this calculation requires the reading of all meters in a cluster, which becomes challenging when independent prepaid meters exist between an AMI meter cluster. These meters are not linked to the AMI system, making it difficult to include them in the calculation of system losses. To address this issue, this study proposes a solution to incorporate pre-existing prepaid meters into the AMI system. The study also includes a gap analysis of the integration process, identifying potential challenges and areas for improvement. In addition, the study conducts laboratory testing to prove the concept. Overall, this study provides a practical solution to a significant challenge in the implementation of AMI technology. The proposed solution can help energy providers to improve their energy management systems, reduce system losses, and enhance their overall energy efficiency.
