Comprehensive Assessment of Small Batch Advanced Metering Infrastructure Utilization on Java Region to Support Indonesian Smart Grid Systems

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is the breakthrough path to implement the Indonesian smart grid system. The topology of small batch AMI utilization in the Java Region consists of a smart meter, communication media, data concentrator unit, head-end system, and meter data management system. By applying this technology, it can allow a government state-owned electricity company (PLN) to enable a two-way real-time energy monitoring system for supporting smart grid applications. It also has other benefits, such as simplifying the billing collection process and providing realtime event notification to monitor energy meter activities. On Java Regional Business, PLN has implemented AMI in three different locations (Bandung, Jakarta, and Surabaya). The goal of this small batch AMI implementation in Java Regional Business is to provide pre-commercial references and several evaluations for a future large-scale rollout implementation. The evaluation of small batch AMI implementation in Java regional businesses will be discussed, along with a deep dive into the preproduction process, customer installation, and performance evaluation. The end results of this evaluation will allow PLN to have a better view of a forthcoming large-scale project of advanced metering infrastructure to support smart grid system development in Indonesia.
