Mitigation of the Potential for Sudden High-Temperature Hotspots on Substation Equipment

Thermovision is carried out routinely to monitor hot spot anomalous conditions or hotspots on equipment. Several hotspot anomaly findings with category III suddenly occur in the conductor clamps. From the evaluation and mitigation carried out, several settings and measurement methods were found that were not uniform and did not match the proper setup. Errors in the settings and measurements of this measuring instrument cause the measurement data to be invalid so that it has the potential to be unable to accurately detect hotspot conditions. This paper describes several mitigation steps taken to follow up on the sudden occurrence of category III hotspots. Prediction of temperature rise using linear regression is also proposed to be able to help estimate the temperature increase based on the increase in current in the substation components.
