Design of Hybrid Solar Power Generation System on Tello Island

Indonesia’s electricity service provider, PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara), plans to conduct more environmentally friendly business activities. PLN intends to use hybrid schemes with batteries and convert diesel power plants to renewable energy sources in isolated power systems. This aims to reduce fossil fuel usage and improve power generation cost efficiency. Tello Island is one of 200 locations chosen for the project as a research area due to its isolated power system and the fuel consumption of the existing diesel generator in the first phase. This paper discusses the process of designing a hybrid solar power system on Tello Island. The main objective of this design process is determining and optimizing the hybrid solar power generation system’s capacity according to existing system conditions and component capacity available in the market. The designed system consists of an existing 1,524kW diesel generator system, 2,207.25kWp photovoltaic modules, 1,800kW grid inverter, 2,064kWh battery, and 800kW battery inverter. With those designed configurations of the hybrid system, the operating time of the existing diesel power plant had reduced from 24 hours to just 15 hours. Not only that, but the designed system also has better economic parameter values compared to the existing system. Future development of this project’s results can be carried out by adjusting the designed hybrid solar power generation system to load developments that occur in real-life on Tello Island’s power system.
