Evaluation of VSC-HVDC System Behavior under Small Disturbances

As HVDC system is capable of transmitting bulk power over great distances at low cost, it is widely used for electrical power transmission and interconnection of asynchronous systems in super grids. The paper focuses on the response of a voltage sourced converter (VSC) based HVDC system connecting two asynchronous AC sources to variable power and voltage conditions. Additionally, the system components and the vector control of active/reactive powers and DC link voltage are simulated in MATLAB/Simulink by adjusting the controller's settings. AC/DC voltages and active/reactive powers at both converter stations are monitored and analyzed. The results of the study reveal that the system's control is robust by providing essential performance indicators, like overshoot/undershoot (OS% / US%), settling time (tsett), and correlation factor (CF).
