Two-stage Robust Configuration and Optimal Operation Strategy of HES System on Generation Side

This paper introduces a two-stage approach to improve the cost-effectiveness and operational flexibility of renewable energy-based power system with energy storage. The focus is on power generation-side hybrid energy storage. In the first stage, historical data of renewable energy generation is used to establish an uncertainty ensemble, capturing the range of power output variations. This information is then utilized to create a robust configuration model for each type of energy storage unit in the hybrid system. In the second stage, the optimal configuration scheme obtained in the first stage is refined by imposing intra-day scale constraints. This results in the determination of the robust configuration for each energy storage unit, considering investment costs and addressing supply and grid connection requirements. Furthermore, an optimal operation model is developed to minimize net load volatility while ensuring energy supply and grid connection requirements are met. This approach significantly improves the system's grid-friendliness. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed configuration model and operation strategy, an example using data from Xinjiang Province wind farm, its equipped energy storage, and load is presented. This example serves as evidence of the competitiveness and practicality of the approach presented in this paper.
