Review on Icing Growth Model for Overhead Transmission Lines

Icing on overhead transmission lines is one of the most serious threat to the safe and stable operation of power system. The occurrence of icing gives rise to a range of electrical and mechanical accidents, resulting in significant loss for the power system. This paper summarizes the research status of icing growth models in order to evaluate the icing conditions on these lines and ensure the safe and reliable operation of the power system. Firstly, ice disaster mechanism is summarized considering the formation of line icing, icing type and icing influencing factors. Secondly, it summarizes ice growth models and their limitations, starting with commonly used physics and machine learning models. Finally, the potential research directions for icing growth models in overhead transmission lines are discussed aiming to pave the way for future studies.
