Secure Sensor Data Transmission in IoT: Robust Implementation of LwM2M on the Lightweight Device Communication

Monitoring an area condition is one of the instances of using the Internet of Things (IoT) concept. IoT technology lets us see and monitor several areas' conditions and statuses at once. One method that can be used is to use edge devices to read the area conditions we want. This paper presents the implementation of a secure sensor data transmission system in an Internet of Things (IoT) environment. We focus on the implementation of the Sense HAT sensor on a Raspberry Pi board as an edge device for monitoring specific area conditions. The system utilizes the Sense HAT sensor to capture sensor readings, then transmits them from the Anjay application to the Leshan server. To ensure secure communication, the Anjay application uses Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) with Elliptic curve Diffie Helman Exchange and Signature algorithm using ARIA-GCM cipher and SHA256 as the hash algorithm. The algorithm is implemented on Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) that functions as a cipher chip. The FPGA implementation gives hardware security performance to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of sensor data transmission transmitted in LwM2M-based IoT networks.
