Physics-Based Modeling of GaN MQW LED for Visible Light Communication Systems

This article presents a physics-based compact model of gallium nitride (GaN) multiple quantum well (MQW) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) tailored for visible light communication (VLC) systems. The proposed LED model takes into account the internal physical mechanisms when predicting illumination and communication performance in VLC systems. Analytic expressions for the LED’s output illumination intensity and electrooptic signal response are derived across varying injection levels. These expressions characterize the LED’s intrinsic nonlinear behavior and impact on VLC system performance, offering guidelines for the design of LEDs and VLC systems. The accuracy of the proposed model is validated experimentally in a complete VLC transmission system by comparing predictions with measurements.
