Advances in the Magnetic and Mechanical Design of the 9 T NbTi MADMAX Dipole

One of the challenges in the research of axion-like particles and ultimately in the exploration of the physics beyond the standard model is the high magnetic field required in large volume detectors. For the MAgnetized Disk and Mirror AXion experiment (MADMAX), a 9 T NbTi block dipole magnet, 5.9 m in length with a bore diameter of 1.35 m, is required to detect axions with masses in the range of 100
μ
eV. Such large dimensions and demanding performances led to unconventional solutions for the magnet design. In this article, the updated magnetic and mechanical design are reported. Starting from the updated physics requirements, the article introduces the modifications adopted respect to the conceptual magnetic design and the impact of using cables-in-conduits. The magnetic and mechanical designs are described hereafter, showing the latest results in terms of optimization of the magnetic field peak, conductor cost, mechanical constraints, and overall mass reduction.
