Condition Monitoring for Overall Equipment Effectiveness using Internet of Things, Edge Computing, and Extended Reality

Technological advances in recent years have had a noticeable impact on how the manufacturing floor operates. With more industries transitioning to Industry 4.0, the demand for richer and ubiquitous data flows and increased networking becomes more prevalent. The rise of Smart Factories creates a need for widely available and cost-effective solutions that can support digital transformation. This work highlights the importance of condition monitoring to improve the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). We describe the design and implementation of a real-time temperature and humidity monitoring system for OEE using Internet of Things (IoT). We conduct two pilot experiments to verify the monitoring capabilities of the system. We integrate the system into an IoT sensing Edge Computing platform used for the acquisition, distribution, and real-time dashboarding of sensing data and for notifying stakeholders about deviations via e-mail. We make the dashboards available in an Extended Reality Smart Factory setting. Finally, we discuss future work directions to use the IoT platform for predictive maintenance.
