Wildfire monitoring in Portugal using Sentinel-2

This paper summarizes the applicability of the Sentinel-2 satellite constellation to Wildfire monitoring and presents a methodology to map burned areas. The proposed methodology was developed in a pedagogical context and is applied to three violent wildfires that occurred in Portugal between 2017 and 2020. The obtained results are in accordance to those officially estimated by the Portuguese authorities.
