Design and Development of Autonomous Smart Energy Meter with Remote Management Control

Traditional power reading methods for electricity consumption billing involve manual labour which is inefficient, slow and prone to human errors. Using Internet of Things (IoT), this method can be automated by implementing a "Smart Energy Meter" made with an embedded controller. The energy consumption reading through this device can then be stored and transferred using wireless transmission to smartphones using a dedicated mobile app. The smart meter can also be used to monitor power usage of each appliance which can provide valuableinsights regarding power usage behaviour of customers. This data can be used for developing an efficient power management system. This IoT system uses an Arduino interfacing to remotely switch appliances On/Off. Furthermore, this smart energy meter can be incorporated in a smart grid involving power generation, distribution and power infrastructure.
