A Dual-Band Circularly Polarized GPS Antenna Using Artificial Magnetic Conductor

A dual-band circularly polarized (CP) antenna using an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) is proposed for global positioning system (GPS) applications in this paper. An AMC reflector is employed for improving the axial ratio (AR) performance while obtaining greater gain. The proposed antenna achieves right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) radiation with simulated gain of 5.7 dBi and 8.9 dBi in the GPS L2 (1.227 GHz) and L1 (1.575 GHz) bands, respectively. The simulated results show that -10 dB impedance bandwidths are 1.192-1.265 GHz and 1.534-1.648 GHz, 3 dB AR bandwidths are 1.223-1.238 GHz and 1.555-1.580 GHz, which is suitable for GPS.
