Design of A Wideband Metasurface Antenna using Characteristic Mode Analysis

A wideband metasurface antenna is designed by using characteristic mode analysis (CMA). The proposed metasuface is formed by a 7×7 square patches nonuniform array. Based on the characteristic mode analysis, the proposed metasurface is designed by arranging larger patches at the inner row and smaller patches at the outmost row, having a tapering configuration. The metasurface is excited by using a capacitive coupling excitation of a probe-fed circular patch, a wideband is achieved by combing two resonances of the metasurface and patch modes. The simulate results show that, the proposed metasurface antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 43.6% and a good omnidirectional pattern in horizontal plane.
