Analyzing the Effect of Substrates on a Compact Pentagonal Patch Antenna-A Short Review

It’s important to choose the right substrate material when designing a microstrip patch antenna (MSA). By choosing the right substrate material, it is possible to overcome the drawbacks of microstrip antennas, including their low gain, low efficiency, high bandwidth. This is because the substrate’s permittivity is a crucial factor in determining the efficiency, bandwidth and radiation pattern of patch antennas. This work presents a novel slotted antenna design using Pentagonal shaped Microstrip Patch Antenna (PMSA) on FR4 epoxy dielectric substrate for C-band applications. In this study, the proposed antenna designed with FR4 substrate is compared with eight other different dielectric substrates, to assess the impact on antenna performance with regard to return loss, gain, bandwidth, and VSWR. It can be shown that FR4 epoxy produces the best impedance matching, VSWR=1.14 and bandwidth=0.53 GHz for the proposed antenna is suitable for C-band applications. PMSA with other substrates also achieved return loss ranges from -12.28 to -36.30 dB at the resonating frequencies ranging from 5.23 to 7.23 GHz resonating frequency.
