Use of recorded video to enhance students’ learning in measurement units

Measurement is an important skill that need to master by all the undergraduate students that enroll into construction-related degree programmes. The disciplines of the degree programmes that need to learn this skill include civil engineering, building surveying, construction management and quantity surveying. Measurement is one of the core streams in the quantity surveying degree programme. To master this skill, students are only need to have a good mathematical skill to compute the quantities. They are required to have a good basic construction technology knowledge to assist them to describe a construction item as well as good visualization when interpreting the drawings. At the higher educational institutions, measurement units are delivered in the face-to-face approach at the measurement studio. However, the existing delivery method may not able to enhance learning experience of younger generations which is known as Generation Z. They are digital savvy and prefer flexible learning but have shorter attention span compare to older generations. Limited studies are focused on the way to improve new generation’s understanding in this specialized skill. The research aim of this study is to explore the effectiveness of recording videos and feedback system in the measurement units. A questionnaire was distributed to the undergraduates who are taking a quantity surveying degree programme in a private university. A response rate of 39% have been achieved in this study. This study found that students generally feel that recorded video can improve their learning in measurement knowledge especially in respect of convenience, confidence, academic performance, satisfaction and motivation. Students also feel the importance of feedback in enhancing their learning in measurement. In conclusion, this study suggests the use of diverse teaching methods to enhance learning of new generations. Building Information Modelling (BIM) software can be used to enhance students’ visualization in learning measurement.
