An Integrated Controller for Compact Rectifier-Type HTS Flux Pumps

High-temperature superconducting (HTS) flux pumps can energize HTS magnets wirelessly, eliminating the need for bulky current leads and associated cryogenic heat load, which are promising for magnet applications. Transformer-rectifier flux pumps (TRFPs) are clear in physics, with simple circuit topology, and have good controllability, becoming an ideal approach. Existing work on TRFP mainly focuses on principle, circuit design, and optimization, whereas ancillaries, such as power supplies, control, and monitoring systems, are largely ignored. However, in order to enhance the technological readiness level of TRFPs, optimization of these ancillaries is indispensable. In this work, we designed and developed an integrated flux pump controller together with a compact self-rectifier-type flux pump. We achieved onboard integration of the flux pump power supply, data acquisition system, feedback control system, and user interface. The highly integrated system can be used to ramp or stabilize current in an HTS magnet. The small footprint, lightweight, low power demand, and low-cost system may substantially boost TRFP applications in HTS magnets.
