Development of a Self-Coupling High-Voltage Square Waveform Pulse Transformer

To accomplish an amplitude step-up of 100-ns high-voltage pulses, square waveform pulse transformers (SWPTs) are appropriate, which benefit for the system design with solid state and compactness. In this article, a self-coupling high-voltage SWPT was investigated numerically and experimentally. The pulse transformer is designed based on self-coupling windings with the ratio of 1:4; the primary winding is of an integral structure and the second is of paralleled winding groups; the magnetic cores are made of Fe-based amorphous alloy (thickness of
$25~\mu \text{m}$
) with strong layer insulation. Moreover, the supporting structure adopts combined insulation consisting of FR4 epoxy resin and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) plates. Experimentally, the pulse transformer is successfully applied in conjunction with a low-impedance pulse generator, and high-voltage pulses with a peak voltage of approximate 350 kV, pulse duration of about 150 ns, and rise time of about 50 ns were achieved on a resistive load of
$60~\Omega $
. Importantly, it can operate stably for 6 min with 30 Hz and the number of accumulated pulses has been more than 200000 without maintenance.
