Optimizations of Authentication Algorithm for Space Communication

Nowadays, space communication finds its applications in all fields of life; therefore, providing security for space communication is becoming more and more important. Data security algorithms, such as data authentication algorithms, provide the ability for the communicating system to identify the users. As a result, data authentication algorithms offer services for data authenticity and integrity. Besides, data authentication algorithms are often used with data encryption algorithms; As a result, adopting cipher-based authentication will allow for more effective use of the data security techniques while requiring less implementation space. A popular cipher-based authentication algorithm is the Cipher-based Message Authentication Code (CMAC). The CMAC algorithm's throughput is constrained, nonetheless, by its serial architecture. The CMAC algorithm is given a parallel authentication technique in this work, which increases the algorithm's throughput. Further, the throughput can be further improved by using the reduced rounds Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm as an optimization. In addition, the space radiation tolerant implementation is proposed for the AES algorithm that is used in the CMAC algorithm as a block cipher. The proposed technique is implemented on the hardware and software with optimizations, which should boost throughput. The proposed algorithm provides significant improvement in throughput as compared to previous algorithms.
