Effect of Harmonics Contributed by EV Charger on Performance of Induction Motor included in Air Condition Load

The EV charger either a single-phase-based slow charger or dc fast charger are considered as the nonlinear loads. The penetration of these loads on the distribution and transmission system may lead to harmonic distortion in the line current and grid voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). Although the EV chargers are designed to contribute to harmonics within the specified limit as prescribed by IEEE standard 519-2014. However, the larger penetration of EV loads to significant contribution in the overall THD of line current and grid voltage. Due to this harmonic pollution, the performance of other loads like ac loads which includes single-phase induction motors and industrial drives which use three-phase induction motors (IMs) may be deteriorated. Therefore, the effect of the connection of single-phase slow chargers and three-phase fast EV chargers on the harmonic profile of current and grid voltage on the distribution system is studied. Further, the single-phase and three-phase IMs are connected in parallel with these chargers to study effect of harmonics in line current on the thermal profile and efficiency of the motor. The findings are validated with the help of experimental results which are captured using a laboratory prototype developed in the lab.
