The Performance Analysis of Single Phase PWM Inverter with Various Delay Times

The performance of the pulse width modulation (PWM) inverter is affected by several factors, especially the delay time between switching power devices on the same arm. This is well-known as a delay time (DT) which is a fixed value in the PWM design. The delay time leads to deteriorate performance such as harmonics, output ripples, and so on. In this work, the performance of a single-phase PWM inverter is analysed for various delay durations using an average-based pulse compensation method with feedforward and feedback strategies. The feedforward compensation technique uses a model of the power devices to predict the delay time and to compensate it. The feedback compensation method uses a delay estimator to estimate the delay time and to compensate it. A single-phase PWM inverter with DT compensator model is developed and analysed using MATLAB/Simulink software. The performance parameters analyse include the output voltage waveform, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), and efficiency. The results show as the delay increases, the THD of the output voltage grows, whereas the efficiency decreases.
