A Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna Array Operating at WLAN Band

This paper presents a pattern reconfigurable antenna array consisting of two identical antenna elements on an FR-4 substrate. Each antenna element includes a main patch (MP), four main parasitic patches (MPP), and four sub-parasitic patches (SPP). Ten ideal switches are mounted on the MPP and SPP to control the connection/disconnection of each parasitic patch with the ground plane to achieve pattern reconfiguration. By controlling ON/OFF state of the switches, the proposed antenna can operate in eight states with eight steerable beams at
${\boldsymbol{\theta=\pm 18^{\mathrm{o}}}}$
in the XOZ plane. The proposed antenna has a common bandwidth of 2.33-2.49 GHz and gain ranging from 5.11 to 8.54 dBi on the eight states.
