Asymmetric Propulsion: One Blade, Unlimited Potential

A propeller generates thrust in the axial direction by spinning the blade around its axis of rotation. With an asymmetric propeller, such as one with a single blade, the speed can be varied throughout each rotation to create an additional turning moment that can be used to steer the vehicle. In this way, a streamlined Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) can be maneuvered using a only single motor and without the need for fins or additional control surfaces. In this paper, we present recent results from our continued development of Asymmetric Propulsion.
