Study on the properties of m-phenylene type unsaturated polyester resin modified asphalt mixtures

To improve the low-temperature crack resistance, water stability and fatigue resistance of bridge deck pavements and to reduce the cost, an unsaturated polyester resin (UP) modified asphalt mixture is developed in this paper. The property of the UP modified asphalt mixture is tested by splitting, rutting, low temperature bending, water immersion, freeze-thaw splitting and low temperature bending tests, and is compared with those of matrix asphalt mixture, SBS modified asphalt mixture and epoxy asphalt mixture. The results show that the UP modified asphalt mixture exhibits superior strength, high temperature stability and low temperature cracking resistance in comparison to the SBS modified asphalt mixture. Additionally, its moisture damage resistance and fatigue resistance are similar to those of the SBS modified asphalt mixture. Compared to epoxy asphalt mixture, while there may be some differences in terms of strength, high temperature stability and fatigue resistance, it boasts superior low-temperature cracking resistance and moisture damage resistance.
