A statistical analysis of the maritime accidents in 2015-2020 in China waters

In recent years, maritime accidents have occurred frequently, resulting in significant economic losses and casualties, posing a significant challenge to maritime safety that needs to be addressed. The investigation reports of maritime accidents in China from 2015 to 2020 are collected for analyzing the spatiotemporal characteristics and causations. Additionally, regression analysis is employed to explore the correlation between different indicators. The results show that maritime accidents are mostly collision accidents and ordinary accidents, with more accidents occurring from 16:00 to 20:00 and in the fourth quarter of the year, and most accidents occur in waterway waters. The accident mainly occurred in bulk carriers and small ships with less than 3000 gross tonnages. The number of accidents is significantly related to the number of coastal production wharf berths. The main human factors are negligence in the lookout, inappropriate evasive action, over speed, and improper operation. According to the analysis results, suggestions on maritime safety supervision are put forward to reduce the probability of accidents.
