GNSS Spoofer Localization With Counterfeit Clock Bias Observables on a Mobile Platform

It is widely known that spoofing is a major threat that adversely impacts the reliability and accuracy of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) receivers. Apart from detection and mitigation, spoofer localization is also essential for mitigating its harmful effects. Most of the reported jammer/interference localization methods rely on a spatially distributed sensor network that typically requires accurate time synchronization. Other methods that utilize angle-of-arrival (AOA) measurements to perform the source localization are sensitive to multipath effects. This article presents a GNSS spoofer localization method based on the measurements of counterfeit clock states by a single receiver on a mobile platform. In this method, a closed-form estimator is first utilized to obtain a rough estimation of the spoofer position, followed by a generalized least square (LS) estimator to refine the position estimation more accurately. Simulation evaluations show that the performance of this method depends on the geometry between the spoofer and the receiver moving trajectory, which can be properly planned due to the mobility of the receiver. Using a professional survey-grade receiver can achieve better than 10 m localization accuracy. Furthermore, this method offers the great advantage of simplified system deployment and hardware requirement.
