Design of a PlanarInverted-F Antenna (PIFA) 2.4 GHz for Bluetooth and WLAN applications

Bluetooth and WLAN services are playing an important role nowadays in wireless communications. For these applications, a novel PIFA (Planar Inverted-F Antenna) design is described. The proposed design employs a single feed port and shorting plate in its geometry. Bandwidth achieved by the design is 335 MHz (2.15 GHz to 2.49 GHz at -10 dB base line). The peak gain achieved by this design is 4.74 dB. Gain of antenna without shorting plate is 1.5 dB, which being significantly lesser than the design with 4mm wide shorting plate gain. Use of shorting plate provides improved bandwidth and gain values. Comparisons are drawn with other PIFA antennas based on performance measures. The antenna is suitable for Bluetooth and WLAN usage owing to its bandwidth and other integral parameters. The design produces a higher gain and a low VSWR value providing a performance advantage.
