An Optimization Design Method for Large Spatial Structures

With the development of deep space exploration, it requires that small satellites have more functions while not increasing their mass too much. To ensure the stiffness of the entire satellite, the structure of small satellites is required to have higher specific stiffness. In order to improve the specific stiffness of spatial structures, this paper use the finite element software Workbench to perform topology optimization design on typical large-scale spatial structural frames based on the topology optimization theory of variable density method. This paper considers the objective function which to maximize structural stiffness and minimize mass, with load constraints as the boundary and residual volume ratio as the constraint conditions for optimization. Through the analysis of the optimized model, the mass of the optimized model is reduced by more than 30% under the condition that the first order frequency remains unchanged. Through verification, the statics strength and dynamic characteristics of the optimized model can meet the requirements, which verifies the effectiveness of the optimization design method for large space structures.
