Design Principles of Dual Winding Dual Permanent Magnet Machines with Multi-torque Components

Dual winding dual permanent magnet (PM) machines (DWDM) are a novel type of flux modulated machine with the merits of high torque density and high fault-tolerance. In this paper, the design of these machines is studied comprehensively using both theoretical equations and finite element analysis (FEA). Firstly, the topology and operation principle of the motor are briefly introduced. Secondly, the quantity relationship and constraint conditions of slot/pole combinations are given, and a variety of slot/pole combinations are listed. Then, the space constraints between the PM and armature winding considering thermal load are given and discussed. Moreover, the expressions of flux linkage, back-EMF, average electromagnetic torque, and power factor are derived. Besides, based on the finite element model of DWDM, some important parameters are analyzed and discussed.
