Permanent Magnet-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machine with Auxiliary Barriers

In conventional permanent Magnet (PM)-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machines (PM-SynRMs), the peak electromagnetic torque and reluctance torque components are not synched and naturally occur at 45 electrical degrees current phase angle displacement. Thereby, the output torque utility is always below the algebraic sum of the electromagnetic and reluctance torque components. This paper presents a new rotor layout to properly deflect the path of magnetic flux in the rotor and allow the two torque components peak at or near the same current phase angle. The basic electromagnetic characteristics of the of the proposed structures (i.e., output torque, back_EMF, power factor and efficiency) are captured in Finite Element (FE), and compared against the baseline structure.
