Ultra High Sensitive Neural Recorder with Additive Manufacturing

Neuronal activity recordings are essential for evaluating and understanding the brain's function and possible neurological disorders. In this paper, we present a first of a kind 3D additive manufactured sensor for recording biopotentials in a battery-less and wireless manner. This was done by establishing an RF link between the implanted device and an exterior interrogator. The associated antennas are designed and optimized to achieve the best performance in communicating through the skin. In addition, the antennas and matching circuit are integrated in a multilayer design to decrease the footprint by 52%. The first fabricated prototype shows good agreement with simulations with less than 3dB of discrepancy in manufactured phantom to emulate the skull's skin properties. The proposed implant design offers a 10-fold increase as compared to previous wireless and battery-less brain implant recorders.
