Recent Advancements on System-by-Design Strategies for the Synthesis of Complex Radiating Systems

Due to the growing need for advanced electromagnetic (EM) devices in numerous modern applications such as automotive radar systems, the complexity of the radiating systems has risen in recent years. In this context, the System-by- Design (SbD) paradigm has proven to be a reliable framework to efficiently deal with the arising computational complexity to synthesize high-performance EM devices. The SbD approach relies on the smart interconnection of multiple functional blocks, each one aimed at solving a single subtask. Through the proper selection of a single-objective (SO) or multi-objective (MO) optimization the SbD allows to obtain different trade-off solutions among the optimization targets. The effectiveness of the SbD paradigm is shown with an illustrative example concerning the design of perturbed traveling-wave open stub (PTOS) antenna for mm-wave automotive radars.
