A Dual-Band Frequency Selective Surface with Reconfigurable Properties

This paper presents a dual-band frequency selective surface (FSS) with reconfigurable properties unit cell for the millimeter wave frequency band. The proposed unit cell is composed of patches printed on a dielectric substrate with no metallic screen on the back side, where a PIN diode is embedded between the two patches. The unit cell transmits or reflects the incident waves by switching the diode to ON and OFF states. The maximum reflection is achieved at the OFF state of the diode in the frequency band of 4.70 to 7.75 GHz and the maximum transmission is obtained in the same frequency band when the diode is ON state. In contrast, the maximum transmission is achieved at OFF state of the diode in the frequency band of 25.80 to 30.40 GHz and the maximum reflection is obtained in the same frequency band when the diode is ON. The multiple functionalities with high values of transmission and reflection make this FSS a good candidate for mm-wave applications.
