AMC-Backed Wearable Monopole Antenna for Sub-6 GHz 5G and WLAN Applications

A novel Artificial Magnetic Conductor (AMC) backed, wearable, wide-band monopole antenna has been designed for the sub-6GHz 5G and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) bands. To meet the requirements of flexibility and user comfort, the monopole and the AMC structure are printed on textile denim substrate and have a dimension of 0.66λ×0.66λ×0.10λ mm

(λ calculated at the resonant frequency of 5.2 GHz). Simulation results have shown that the antenna has a −10dB impedance bandwidth of 31 % (4.40 – 6.02 GHz), directional radiation patterns, gain above 5dBi, and efficiency greater than 80% across the entire operating band. Additionally, the performance of the antenna persists throughout the entire operating band despite structural deformation and the lossy effects of being worn on the human body.
