Multi-Mode Heterogenous Dielectric Resonator Antennas with Very Wide Bandwidth

We present a new approach for designing wideband dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) operating across multiple modes by exploiting the spatial variation of their dielectric constant with heterogenous materials. We show that in comparison with ring-loaded configurations that use a few different materials with different dielectric constants, the heterogeneous approach allows for a smother impedance variation and results in an improved bandwidth. A Wi-Fi band aperture coupled cylindrical DRA with a 57% impedance bandwidth using a heterogeneous dielectric is demonstrated. While a linear dielectric taper is implemented in the reported studies, the proposed approach opens the doors to exploit the capabilities of designing tailored dielectric profiles for different DRA applications.
