Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons Based Periodic Leaky-wave Antenna with Suppressed Open Stopband

A spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPP) based periodic leaky-wave antenna (PLWA) with resonate patches is designed for open stopband suppression. Corrugated grooves are etched along the two edges of the wide slot to form two symmetry SSPP transmission lines, which are used to confine and modify electromagnetic waves. 8 ladder-shaped resonate patches are periodically loaded between two SSPP transmission line to suppress open stopband (OSB). The proposed antenna realizes a large scanning range from -51 degree to 34 degree through broadside, operating from 7.4 GHz to 12.2 GHz. The gain is greater than 9.5 dBi in the whole operating band and average radiation efficiency reaches 91%. A good open stopband suppression of 23.7 dB is achieved when beam scans to broadside at 10.2 GHz.
