Uniform and Gradient Metasurfaces for Backscatter Communication

Achieving high-efficient and low-power communication is pivotal yet very challenging in the emerging technologies. Unlike conventional backscatter communication system, we propose and demonstrate two amplitude-reconfigurable metasurfaces working around 5.8 GHz loaded with PIN diodes to build new backscatter communication transmitters. The transmitters using the uniform and the gradient metasurfaces can both achieve high-efficiency polarization conversion, so they can cooperate with the receiver end to eliminate the interference of the environmental carrier source. The gradient metasurface can further realize the function of anomalous reflection so that it can achieve highly directional reflection of backscatter signals. Due to the advantages of high spectral efficiency and low energy consumption, this system can be widely used in future engineering applications for the internet of things, especially for smart home, wearable sensing and others.
