3D Injectable Mechanical Metamaterials for Tissue Engineering Applications

Auxetic materials are a class of mechanical metamaterials which have negative Poisson ratio (Fig. 1). Mechanical metamaterials are artificial materials which have extra - ordinary mechanical properties due to their geometry and orientation, and not due to their composition. Auxetic porous materials facilitate mass transport and, therefore, there is potential for optimal delivery of nutrients, metabolic wastes and therapeutic agents. For these reasons, auxetic architectures have been identified as candidates for the development of next - generation porous scaffolds for tissue engineering applications, based on the unique combination of suitable materials and structure design.
