Active learning methods in the discipline of Introduction to Control and Automation Engineering: Meaningful Learning and higher engagement in the Engineering course

The lack of student engagement with their chosen undergrad course is something that deserves attention, whether to motivate the student regarding their chosen course or to prevent them from dropping out. In the field of engineering, the impact of attrition is concerning due to its high technological investments. The Control and Automation Engineering course fits into this scenario, especially when offered at a public institution. Active learning methodologies were employed in the pedagogical planning of this study, promoting meaningful learning through the completion of an engineering project with incoming students and allowing them to experience the peculiarities and demands that are natural to the field of engineering. The engagement of incoming students with the course can be evidenced through the satisfaction rate of over 90% of the respondents towards the proposed active learning methodologies. The attrition rates obtained in the researched classes compared to those of the national average signals towards the potential of active learning methodologies for increasing students’ commitment within the course, although further studies are necessary to confirm this improvement.
