Using YOLOv5 and ResNeSt model to detect chest situs inversus in X-ray images

Situs inversus is a rare congenital abnormality where the organs in the chest and abdomen are mirror-reversed. Due to the reversed orientation, medical interventions such as visceral surgery or organ transplant carry an increased risk, as the mirror-image organs can significantly affect the procedure. Failure to detect situs inversus before treatment can result in medical errors. This paper proposes a method that combines the outputs of YOLO and ResNeSt to see situs inversus in X-ray images, providing better diagnostic information and treatment options for physicians. Experimental results show that our method achieves a MAP of 99.54% on YOLO and a weighted accuracy of 99.99% on anomaly detection. This proposed method can effectively detect the possibility of situs inversus. It can serve as a reminder for healthcare professionals to recognize orientation during diagnosis and treatment, thereby reducing the potential for medical errors.
