Design of wideband honeycomb frequency selective surface structure

In this paper, a bandpass FSS combining two-dimensional (2D) planar structure and three-dimensional (3D) structure is proposed. Each unit consists of three layers: the up-per and lower layers are identical paper-based honeycomb structures with slotlines, while the middle layer is PCB (printed circuit board) with hexagonal loops. This structure is not only light in weight, but also has good mechanical strength. Equivalent circuit method is used to assist the analysis, and S-parameters from both full-wave simulation and circuit simulation are presented and compared. The simulation results show that the FSS can generate a wide passband from 3.38 GHz to 8.95 GHz.
